New Archival Site on Early Libertarian History

An archival site has just been posted to make available to the public the history of Society for Libertarian Life (SLL) at http://sll.freedom1776.com/ .

SLL was an early libertarian organization that was founded in 1973 at California State University, Fullerton and expanded across California and had national significance.  A slew of issue papers, newsletters, and posters were produced by SLL from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. The material posted provides a window into the thinking and activities of the early libertarians/classical liberals.

I was involved in this project since I was the founder of SLL and had stored some of the material that is now on display. The Hoover Institute at Stanford University also has a limited collection of SLL archival material.

The Cover-Up of italian Fascism's Marxist and Socialist History by Wikipedia Editors

A posting of the former Wikipedia page Controversies over Italian Fascism’s Political Placement can now be found at http://fascistcontroversies.weebly.com/ A number of left-wing editors at Wikipedia wanted to cover up Mussolini’s Marxist and socialist history. They also refused to post a revised and enlarged version with over 350 footnotes by major historians. That version will eventually be posted somewhere else.

One Wikipedia editor complained that to label Mussolini left-wing and a socialist would change 80 years of historiography, although historians have pointed out in many books that three-fourths of Italy’s industry became state-owned by the mid-1930s, making Mussolini a true socialist. Mussolini even boasted about this socialist accomplishment in a major 1934 speech, proclaiming that “Three-fourths of Italian economy, industrial and agricultural, is in the hands of the state.” (Gianni Toniolo, editor, The Oxford Handbook of the Italian Economy Since Unification, Oxford: UK, Oxford University Press, 2013, p. 59; Mussolini’s speech on May 26, 1934.)

Also see the 1933 and 1934 editions of Jane Soames’s authorized translation of Mussolini’s “The Political and Social Doctrine of Fascism." This is where Mussolini proclaims that Fascism is a left-wing movement. http://hipav6.wix.com/history-uncensored

Argument and Rebuttal Against Tax Increase--Measure Q

Below is the argument and rebuttal against the Monterey-Salinas Transit District Tax. I was one of the signers. This language will appear in the Nov. 4, 2014 Voter Booklet.

Argument Against Measure Q

This year’s ballot is awash with tax-generating measures to increase sales taxes, school bonds, hotel transient occupancy tax and transit tax. Further, there will be a number of expensive tax measures at the state level. One would have to be brain-dead to vote for boosting taxes when most governmental bodies spend wildly without much transparency or care while their public employees enjoy obscenely high salaries, health care benefits and bloated pensions. To the overtaxed, it seems that the only purpose of the taxpayer is to foot the bill.

The Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) has no qualms about spending taxpayers’ money freely. They agreed in their Jan. 2014 board meeting to spend up to $100,000 of taxpayers’ funds to research the feasibility of this tax measure. And who can forget their failed attempt two years ago to create a huge maintenance/operations facility at the 58-acre Whispering Oaks business park in Fort Ord, for which they sunk over $4.5 million into design work. Guess who paid for that debacle!

This tax is just another attempt at empire-building. The MST has been seeking more office space, newer buses that are usually less than half full, and more facilities. The MST say they want additional taxpayers’ funds just to help senior citizens, veterans and people with disabilities, but such nice-sounding language comes from their advertising consultants. Who knows if that is true? The German philosopher, Nietzsche, saw through such political smoke screens, observing that “everything the government says is a lie.”

Perhaps not everything, but spin-doctoring often brings home the proverbial bacon in the form of a large revenue stream from taxpayers. This farce needs to stop. Vote NO on Measure Q.

Rebuttal Against Measure Q.

All too often, governmental bodies behave like criminals.  When MST district mailed out thousands of flyers announcing a meeting to let the public know about their proposed tax for the Nov. 4, 2014, ballot, they failed to mention the location.  When several taxpayers found the location, they asked for another meeting. But their pleas were ignored and the MST board voted to put the tax on the ballot with almost no public comments, because almost nobody knew the location. The MST did not want the public at their July 14 meeting! They apparently wanted their meeting held in secret. This is almost criminal, perhaps bordering on consumer fraud.

Over 2,500 years ago, Greek philosopher Aristotle made an astute observation.  He warned: “Subjects are also kept poor by payment of taxes.” And this is the point. The Transit tax is not small when considering the high salaries, pensions and health benefits of public employees that most taxpayers can only dream about.

To the insulated bureaucrats, it seems that they never have enough money. In fact, we could give every penny we own to the various government agencies, and it would still not be enough.  No more new taxes! Vote NO on Measure Q.

Sabotaging History: Mussolini's Socialist Left-Wing Past

The Wikipedia page "Controversies over Italian Fascism's Political Placement" has been deleted from Wikipedia by left-wing editors who don’t want the public to see the historical evidence of Mussolini’s and Italian Fascism’s leftwing and socialist past. The deleted page was thoroughly documented with over 100 footnotes from well-known historians. What the editors hated most is a particular line from Jane Soames' 1933 authorized translation of Mussolini's "The Political and Social Doctrine of Fascism” which stated:  “It may be expected that this will be a century of authority, a century of the Left, a century of Fascism.” Every time my son has posted this quote on other Wikipedia pages, editors quickly delete it, saying that the quote was a mistake or a mistranslation, even though I have two editions (1933 and 1934) of Soames’ booklet, indicating that this very substantial “mistranslation” was not questioned at the time.

Anyway, I have enclosed a site displaying the entire 26-page 1933 booklet. Please try to have other websites linked to it.  Also, I have enclosed my article, "Hitler and Mussolini: History's Dirty Little Secret."

New Organization: Committee Against Fascist Economics (CAFE)

A new organization called the Committee Against Fascist Economics (CAFE) is being set up to show how Mussolini’s Italian Fascism was Marxist-inspired and promoted socialism, especially during the 1930s. The Wikipedia page “Controversies over Italian Fascism’s Political Placement,” gives dozens of examples of the left-wing bearing of Italian Fascism and its successful effort to socialize almost ¾ of the Italian economy by 1939.

This is an important issue for classical liberals and libertarians, since Mussolini repeatedly railed against individualism and classical liberals during his lifetime. To join or contact this new group write to:  lawsam1951@hotmail.com

Speech by Anthony Gregory

Speech: "Habeas Corpus:

A Double-Edged Sword?"

by Anthony Gregory

Saturday, May 17, 2014

3:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Location: Peace Rescource Center,  1364 Fremont Blvd., Seaside

MC: Tom Lee

Free to the public

The writ of Habeas Corpus is a judicial procedure that in theory supposed to require a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court. However, in practice this requirement is not always imposed. Habeas corpus is a summons with the force of a court order that guarantees against any detention that is forbidden by law. This judicial principle is considered the cornerstone of individual liberty and a free society.

But ordinary citizens are not the only ones who have used this principle. Historically, amoral leaders and unethical governments have used habeas corpus for their own nefarious ends. Why and how this has happened is the subject of Anthony Gregory’s speech.

BIO: Anthony Gregory is the Gilbert I. Collins Fellow at the Independent Institute and the author of the book The Power of Habeas Corpus in America: From the King's Prerogative to the War on Terror (Cambridge University Press, 2013). He appears in the Institute's Independent Watch videos and blogs regularly at The Beacon.

He has written articles for The Atlantic, Washington Times, Bloomberg Business Week, Christian Science Monitor, San Diego Union Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Huffington Post, American Conservative, Human Events, Counterpunch, Antiwar.com, LewRockwell.com, Mises.org, The Freeman, Liberty, Reason.com, Future of Freedom Foundation, The Independent Review, and Journal of Libertarian Studies. He earned his B.A. in American history at the University of California at Berkeley.

This speech is sponsored by Libertarians for Peace of Monterey County, a member of the Peace Coalition of Monterey County. Other sponsors: Sam Adams Forum, Libertarian Party of Monterey County. For more information: lawsam1951@hotmail.com or www.montereycountyLP.org
